Default Gas tank rattle

Hey guys, dhot with the 95 Honda VLX 600. I've been riding just about daily, no recurrence of the loss of power. So far so good. However, I have become acutely aware of a rattle from the gas tank whenever I hit the smallest bump on the road. When I bought the bike, the guy mentioned the tank is somewhat loose, but I liked the bike ( first mechanical girlfriend), so I wasn't listening to him ( a lot). I am finding this problem is becoming irritating. I read on Google that Honda made the tanks to sit loosely so they'd fly off in a crash, but they should fit more snugly than mine. What can I do, except wear earplugs? Thanks.

Are the rubber insulators between the tank and the frame still there?

Same question as Tr!p?? There are a set of rubbers that are almost like pucks mounted on the frame that you should check. The tank has a set of "cups" that should slide onto these pucks when it is mounted on the bike. If these rubbers are in poor condition or missing, it would certainly make for a noisy ride... To check them you will have to likely remove the seat, remove whatever bolt that holds the tank to the frame at the rear and lift the back protion of the tank a bit while sliding it backwards. You probably will only have to slide it back a couple of inches to access the rubbers and check their condition.

Refer to this site ( http://www.bikebandit.com/houseofmot...shadow/o/m2846) and go to the "fuel tank" schematic. Number 19 on the drawing are the rubber "pucks" i'm refering to.

Hope this helps....

Everything is as it should be. The rubber grommets are in place. Everything is fastened down as far as the tank is concerned. I took the bike out on a bumpy ride, and the rattle is still there, but a bit more muted. I noticed that my speedo cable has a rattle in it, close to the wheel hub. But the noise seems to come from below the tank. Which is where the speedo rattle is !!!!! Now I have to find out if speedo cable rattle is normal. I am beginning to think that I have to learn to live with it. The bike is a real blast otherwise.

Usually that end of the cable also has a rubber sleeve around it to prevent this vibration. There is usually a little "U" shaped piece where they fit into to hold the cable still. If you hit a good bump the rubber sleeve around the cable pops out of that "U" shaped holder and slides down the cable - this would make that area very loose and would flop around causing the noise.

Sorry, I quickly looked for the schematic, but I'm at work, so can't spend too much time looking, but I know my old Shadow did that about once or twice a year. :)
